California Real Estate CE License Renewal Requirements

Brokers renewing for the first time

45 clock hours every 4 years consisting of: Six 3-hour courses in: Ethics, Agency, Trust Fund Handling, Fair Housing, Risk Management and Management and Supervision; 18 clock hours of consumer protection courses and the remaining clock hours may be consumer service or consumer protection courses.


Salespersons or Brokers second and subsequent renewals

45 clock hours every 4 years consisting of: 8 hour survey course covering the six mandatory subjects (Ethics, Agency, Fair Housing, Trust Fund Handling, Risk Management, and Management and Supervision) OR licensees can take each of the 6 mandatory subjects separately; 18 clock hours of consumer protection courses and the remaining clock hours may be consumer service or consumer protection courses.


Salespersons renewing for the first time

45 clock hours every 4 years consisting of: Five 3-hour courses in: Ethics, Agency, Trust Fund Handling, Fair Housing, and Risk Management; 18 clock hours of consumer protection courses and the remaining clock hours may be consumer service or consumer protection courses.


Renewal Cycle:

Every 4 years from the licensed year on actual date licensed was issued

Inactive: No CE is required while license is inactive. CE must be completed to return to active status. License can only be inactive for 2 years from license expiration date, after that state exam must be retaken.

Exempt: 70/30 Continuing Education Exemption. Pursuant to Business and Professions (B&P) Code Section 10170.8, real estate licensees who submit satisfactory evidence to the Commissioner that they are 70 years of age or older and have been "licensees in good standing" for 30 continuous years in California are exempt from the continuing education requirements for license renewal. A "licensee in good standing" is one who holds an active license which has not been suspended, revoked or restricted as a result of disciplinary action.
