What is a mission statement? A mission statement is a written declaration of an organization's core purpose and focus that normally remains unchanged over time. Properly crafted mission statements serve as filters to separate what is important from what is not. They clearly state which markets will be served and how, and communicate a sense of intended direction to the entire organization.

When creating mission statements, real estate professionals should consider their clients' needs and goals. Points to consider are what service do I provide, how do I provide that service, and who is my target market. If a real estate professional's business has multiple client groups such as homebuyers, home sellers, and landlords, he or she should consider creating a statement for each group.

Because businesses grow, target markets change, competitors leave and enter markets, markets fluctuate, and the overall economy rises and falls real estate professionals may need to revise their mission statements to reflect these factors.

Upon completion of this course, the real estate professional will understand how to create a mission statement to serves as a clear guide for choosing current and future courses of action for their business.
