Creating a process for ethical decision making is tantamount to creating your own moral compass. Because we are all endowed with a free will, we are all capable of making decisions. Ethical behavior is the process of making decisions based on our perception of what we ought to do. Socrates believed that ethics consists of knowing what we ought to do, and such knowledge can be taught. The REALTOR® Code of Ethics Quadrennial training is the embodiment of that belief.
There are seven steps to consider in forming an ethical decision. Listen to your inner voice - if something doesn't feel right, it may be wrong. Stop the process and evaluate your choices before going any further. Weigh the impact and which decision will likely impact those involved most favorably. Remove yourself from the equation, and suspend any personal gain and consider the Golden Rule. Decide by making a clear decision, inform all concerned, and move forward. Monitor the results, and objectively observe the impact of your decision. Lastly, modify where needed and make additional informed choices as the need arises.
Ethical decision making can be as complicated or as simple as we want it to be. The Code of Ethics was created to give REALTORS® a guideline for acceptable standards of business practice. Upon course completion, the real estate professional will have a better understanding of the NAR Code of Ethics, standard enforcement, and practical applications.
