Identify theft is the illegal use of someone's personal information. Identity theft and identity fraud are terms used to refer to all types of crime in which someone wrongfully obtains and uses another person's personal data in some way that involves fraud or deception, typically for economic gain.
Many people don't realize how easily criminals can obtain our personal data without having to break into a home. A person could be touring a home with a real estate agent or be visiting an open house and obtain personal information from a stolen wallet or handbag, unsecured mail or documents in the home such as bank statements or credit card statements. Passports, driver's licenses, Social Security cards, birth certificates, financial records etc. could all lead to identity theft and should be stored in a safe deposit box or lock box whenever showing a property.
Approximately 15,000,000 people in the US have their identities used fraudulently each year. The sophistication level of professional identity thieves is growing. Personal safety doesn’t end with keeping your physical well-being protected. It also includes keeping both you and your client safe from cyber threats such as identity theft. This course explains the basics of identity theft and some ways to prevent it.
